The beauty of Taiwan (台灣之美) Based on your experience in Taiwan, you must have come across some peoples, things, events or places that are firmly imprinted in your memory. You are invited to present a snapshot of this memory using the drawing technique/style uniquely found in your home country/culture. 在您心目中台灣最美的、最令您感動的人事物或景緻是甚麼呢?請以您自己國家文化特有的繪畫方式將它畫出來。
Re-innovation of traditional ornamentation (傳統紋飾再創新) Every country or culture has its own unique traditional ornamentation (as shown in Appendix B). You are invited to use your imagination or creativity to either rearrange or design a genuine ornamentation design based on your traditional ornamentaion.

The Amazing Jiufen, Taiwan (神奇的九份,臺灣)

In nearly every article about Jiufen ever written, it is said that this town was the inspiration for Spirited Away, a Japanese animated film by Hayao Miyazaki, produced by Gibli’s studio. In Jiufen, all kinds of Spirited Away souvenirs and paintings are available. Nobody can deny that Jiufen’s narrow staircases with red lanterns and especially the Amei Teahouse look straight out of Spirited Away.

Enchanting Taiwan (迷人的臺灣)

Alishan National Forest has become my muse for this painting. The Formosan sika deer that can only be found here symbolises the humbleness and warmth of the people I have encountered. The beautiful scenery, the smell of the air, the sound of the crisp leaves will always be lingering for a very long time. Just like trees grow, flowers bloom, rivers flow, animals roam happily in the forest, do embrace and appreciate what is in our hands, and keep our hearts content.

The Ramakien: Amazing Journey at Alishan (拉瑪基恩:阿裡山的驚人旅程)
To represent my feeling during my first trip to Alishan, I drew three main characters of “Ramakien”, the national epic of Thailand. My mind is still imprinted with the scenery of a railway passing through the blooming cherry blossom grove. The serene atmosphere surrounded by old cypress trees made me forget about anxiety. This is symbolized by Thotsakan(the green demon) who is joyful and has forgotten about his forever enemies in the same train, Hanuman and Keyun(the white and purple monkeys). I also drew the white Thai pattern on the front of train to blend the Thai into Alishan's symbol.

Paiwan People in Dong Ho Painting (以東河畫風描繪排灣人)

Paiwan’s child in the Dong Ho painting style – a famous painting technique in Vietnam. Indigenous people always have the unique clothing pattern with colorful combination of necklace, head piece, and style. Of all the indigenous garments, Paiwan clothing has the most similar color scheme to the Dong Ho painting technique, which uses natural color such as red, green, yellow, and pale pink. My painting also portrayed their spiritual animal, a hundred-pacer snake.

The Beauty of Unity of Religion (宗教合一之美)

This art is called mandala. It came to Hinduism from Buddhism. Meaning circle in ancient Sanskrit language, it represents the universe, the world within human. It contributes to the personal and spiritual growth and development of human. The colors in mandala are also the symbols of different aspects of human life. For this mandala, I have used the colors of rainbow.

Barong (巴龍)

Barong is a panther-like creature and character in the Balinese mythology. He is the king of the spirits, leader of the hosts of good, and is depicted as a red-headed lion covered in thick white fur and gilded jewelry with mirrors. The shape of lion Barong is somewhat similar to a Pekingese dog. Its origins are far back in time and quite uncertain, but could be from animist worship before Hinduism appeared.

The Taste of Taiwan (臺灣的味道)

Magnificent Taroko Gorge has become my muse for this creation. It has taken my breath away! Playing around with different brush strokes and ranges of colour but still maintaining the structure and shape of the Taroko Gorge, I can still feel this wonderful place even in my room. The colours of the river, the authentic marble cliffs, and the flora and fauna make this place distinctive. This landscape acts as my guide for my family and friends in Malaysia to show Taiwan as a perfect destination for vacations and exploring new cultures.

An Indian Aesthetic Form of Art (印度美學藝術形式)

This painting represents a fusion of art forms such as Aipan,Tarpa Dance, and Madhubani Painting. Aipan is an established-ritualistic folk art originating in the Indian Himalayas. This art is special as it is done on empty walls, which are brick-red in color called Geru, with a white paste made of rice flour. It is drawn to commemorate auspicious occasions. Tarpa Dance is one of the most famous dances of the Warli Tribe. Madhubani Art is a style of Indian painting, which depicts the social and cultural identity of the land on the themes of religion and love.

Kaohsiung’s Pier-2 (高雄駁二)

Kaohsiung’s Pier-2 is a blend of the city’s high technology and natural landscape, beautified by art installations along the road, depicting the beauty of Taiwan. I remember standing at the harbor bridge at twilight, enjoying the crowds, looking at the honeycomb-shaped Kaohsiung Music Center, and waiting for its amazing light show.

Just like the seed, everything wants to live (像種子一樣,一切都想活下去)

This drawing is inspired by the Batik Bunga Akar (literally means Batik Root Flower), a Batik pattern that depicts the growth of flowers and their roots inside the soil. I hope from this drawing, people will feel the urge to protect the earth, save the soil, and let the flowers grow. Because just like the seed, everything wants to live.
Carp and lotus are the two symbols for success and honesty in Vietnamese culture. Traditionally, they were only used in temples due to their rigid outlines. By making them softer and more colorful, these two symbols can now be widely used in daily life as a reminder of keeping dignity on the way to success.

Representation of Nepali culture in art form“KumariGoddes sand Mandala”(以藝術形式表現尼泊爾文化“庫瑪麗女神和曼荼羅”)

“Mandala” and Kumari” are greatly revered in the cross culture of Buddhism and Hinduism. Kumari, within a Mandala, signifies the purity and five essences of life. Mandalas, the heritage of Newar Culture, represent solidity, liquidity, mobility, heat, and ether, implying the five elements of life. They are worshipped from the birth of a child to his/her coming-of-age ceremonies. Nepal and Kathmandu Valley (was called “Nepal Mandala”) have prominent substance of Mandala. Kumari, the living goddess, is considered a manifestation of Devi and the embodiment of pureness.

Love is love (愛就是愛)

Taiwan is one of the first Asian countries to recognize same-sex love. There is a Rabbit Temple in Taiwan, which is devoted to the rabbit deity - to offer blessing to the homosexuals. I thought this is very beautiful so I drew a lesbian couple being pulled together by a red string. This painting employs the drawing style of the Vietnamese folk paintings called ‘Dong Ho’.

Big Clouds (大雲朵)

This painting is inspired by the Mega Mendung batik motif. Batik Mega Mendung originates from the city of Cirebon, Central Java, Indonesia. The shape of the typical Cirebon batik motif resembles the shape of the clouds, which is said to be the result of the influence of the immigrants from China.

Nepal Eye Window (尼泊爾的眼睛之窗)

The ‘Eye Window’ is a traditional wooden window in Nepal. It was hand-carved, one piece at a time. When there was no glass window in ancient times, these eye window were very popular and could be seen in every house. People would peep though the small holes between the wooden pieces to get outside views. However, contemporary Nepali houses only use glass windows.

Batang Garing Ornamentation (Batang Garing紋飾)

The Batang Garing ornament is one of the ornaments that has long been a typical clothing motif for the Dayak tribe in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. This motif is from the tree of life symbolizes unity in diversity which is relevant on a worldwide scale. Besides being an inspiration in batik cloth, the Batang Garing motif is also often found in carving handicrafts. I created the new design concept of this Batang Garing ornament more simple and modern with bolder colors. So, this ornament motif can be the basis for modern batik motifs.
